Big Dreams & Little Goals

Big Dreams & Little Goals

We all have big dreams and aspirations!

Whether they are health, fitness, finance or career-related, everyone has them floating around the back of their mind. However, many of us have absolutely no idea where to start or how to actually turn our wildest dreams into our reality. This is something I have definitely struggled with myself (and sometimes still do!), but I've learnt some helpful tips and tricks over the years, that have helped me successfully set and achieve my goals week in and week out!

So here are my thoughts and insights into successful goal setting, and the easiest and most manageable way to consistently work towards your biggest dreams, whatever they may be!

It's important that we dream big! It provides us with inspiration and direction for where we would ideally like our lives to go. However, a dream without a plan will only ever remain a dream. Goal setting is the tool that allows us to plan out our actions in order to maximize our progress! A goal is simply a dream with a deadline!

How many times have you sat on the couch on a Sunday night feeling uninspired and sorry for yourself, and told yourself something along the lines of...
  • "Alright, starting on Monday I'm going to eat 150% clean, go to the gym for 2 hours every day, transform my entire life and become the epitome of healthy  living and success!"

So you start off on Monday with all this motivation and good intentions, then a few days pass, the motivation fades and you are left feeling overwhelmed, exhausted and like you've failed yourself once again!

It's the sad and completely unproductive cycle that so many of us fall into! Constantly setting these huge lofty unrealistic goals, convincing yourself this time will miraculously be 'different' to all your previous failed attempts, and then a few days into it you have inevitably fallen off track once again, and wind up feeling like a failure for the 100th time.

Setting these unachievable goals over and over again does nothing but bring negativity into our lives, and never brings us any closer to achieving our dreams!

But don't lose hope! Fortunately, with a little re-wiring of your brain, and only a few minutes every week, you can start to set yourself up for success rather than continuous failure! It's time you actually begin achieving those goals rather than constantly taking one step forward and ten steps back.

So the key is, while it is important to have those big amazing dreams, it's even more important to have small dreams. Small, realistic, achievable (!!!) dreams, that set you along the path of success and constant improvement!

Yes, we all love the idea of being able to 'LOSE 10KG IN A WEEK!' or 'SAVE A MILLION DOLLARS THIS YEAR!!!'. This 'quick fix' mentality has been sold to us our whole life! But guess what?! Quick fixes don't work. At least not in the long run. We all need to take a deep breath and admit to ourselves that we probably won't be able to completely break a lifetime of bad habits in one week, and THAT'S OKAY! Strive for progress, not perfection.

In order to achieve your big long-term goals, you need to put in place a system of easy to achieve short-term goals.

There is no point in making dramatic changes to your lifestyle if they only ever last a week or two! We need to take notice of these unproductive habits and our failure driven mindset, and start implementing small changes into our lives that can actually be maintained for the foreseeable future!

The aim is to stop setting those huge over-arching goals that are often unrealistic, difficult to achieve, non-specific and have no plan behind them! For example;

  • 'This week I'm going to lose 10kg and only eat 100% healthy food!'
  • 'I'm going to save a million dollars and buy a Ferrari!'
  • 'I want to be the best doctor/lawyer/rugby player/chef/accountant in the world!!!'

While these might truly be your long-term goals, they aren't going to happen overnight, and they also aren't specific enough to actually allow you to plan out the changes you need to make in order to achieve them!

Instead try to regularly set small, specific goals for each area of your life that are easy to achieve, and allow you to make realistic and maintainable changes to your lifestyle.

They could look something like this...

  • This week I will aim to eat at least 4 servings of veggies every day.
  • I will only buy coffee 2 days this week instead of every day!
  • I will be in bed by 10pm each night, and aim to get a full 8 hours of sleep.

  • By setting yourself a handful of easily achievable goals each week, you start to enter a much more positive mindset and realise that you actually are capable of making and maintaining changes to your lifestyle!
  • Making these changes small allows you to easily adapt them into your life, without feeling stressed and overwhelmed. The smaller the change, the easier it will be to incorporate it into your day to day life.
  • Keep in mind that in order to eventually achieve your long-term dreams, you need to be able to maintain these changes. So slow and steady is the key!

So, once you've decided on your specific goals for this week, write them somewhere you will see them often!

It could be the background photo or a daily reminder notification on your phone, a note on your laptop, a page in your journal, or anywhere else that will force you to re-read your goals as often as possible and remind you to keep working on them!

Goal setting will always look a little different for all of us, since we all have our own individual dreams and our own unique challenges to get there. But taking the time to set small, specific, realistic goals each week is one tool that is sure to help all of us on our journey towards our dreams!

Remember that it is always better to make small changes that you can MAINTAIN longterm than to make drastic changes that only last a week or two...

So, to sum it up:

  • Each week, reflect on your long-term dreams, and how you are progressing
  • Take a few minutes to write down your small & specific goals
  • Put it somewhere you will see it and regularly be reminded of your goals!
  • At the end of the week, reflect on your progress and reward yourself for being successful! A positive mindset is the most important tool you have!
