Probiotics & Gut Health
Improve Digestion, Immunity, Moods and Energy Levels!
Gut health has become one of the biggest current health and wellness trends, with many aspects of general human health now being directly linked to the health of our gut microbiome. Digestion, immunity, moods, energy levels, skin health and weight management have all been linked to gut health – so looking after your gut is the most effective way to improve your overall health and well-being!
We designed our entire range of protein powders (both whey and plant) with a specific focus on improving gut health and promoting good digestion. We have included functional ingredients such as probiotics that are known to benefit gut health, and in our plant-based protein we have ensured there are no common allergens present that may disrupt digestion and cause bloating or discomfort.
What is Gut Health?
Gut health has become one of the biggest current health and wellness trends, with many aspects of general human health now being directly linked to the health of our gut microbiome.
Your gut is packed full of trillions of microorganisms that are collectively referred to as your ‘gut microbiome’ or ‘microbiota’. Bacteria make up the majority of the microorganisms inside your gut and can generally be categorized as either good or bad. The balance of good to bad bacteria is what largely determines the health of your gut environment. We all have both good and bad bacteria inside our gut, but to optimize our gut health we want to increase the number of good bacteria and minimize the number of bad bacteria.
It is estimated that approximately 70% of our immune system is controlled by the gut, so maintaining a healthy gut environment is one of the absolute best things you can do to boost your immunity and stay healthy! It is also known that about 90% of our serotonin is produced in the gut. Serotonin plays a major role in mood regulation and is commonly thought of as our body’s natural ‘feel-good’ chemical. A healthy gut is linked to increased serotonin production, so having a healthy, well-balanced gut is essential for both your mental and physical health. Gut health is well known for being connected to digestion, and may also be linked to aging, skin health and weight management.
What Are Probiotics?
Probiotics are live bacteria that are known to have beneficial health effects in the gut when consumed.
They are commonly found in foods such as yoghurt, fermented foods, kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha, and tempeh, and can also be consumed in a supplement form (capsules/powders etc). While it is always a good idea to increase your consumption of probiotic foods, supplements are usually the most potent and more reliable way to increase your probiotic intake. Increasing the number of probiotics you consume (if they are good quality) will increase the number of good bacteria inside your gut, which will then lead to a healthier and happier gut environment.
What Makes a ‘Good’ Probiotic?
Finding a high-quality and high-potency probiotic supplement that actually works can be challenging.
Many probiotics (even good-quality & high-strength) are extremely vulnerable to being destroyed/killed before they even reach your gut environment. The good bacteria need to survive the process of digestion, so they can inhabit and populate your gut microbiota! Probiotics are particularly vulnerable to being destroyed by heat and acid, both of which are present in the human digestive tract. The harsh acid inside our stomach is great for breaking down our food, but it isn’t so great for the tiny and sensitive probiotic bacteria that also have to pass through it!
What Is Special About Our Probiotic?
The probiotic we have chosen to supplement our protein powders with is called Bacillus Coagulans.
This form of probiotic is extremely stable and resistant to tough conditions, due to a protective spore coating that forms around the bacteria. This spore coating allows the bacteria to survive much harsher conditions than regular probiotics. Our probiotic has been proven to survive manufacturing processes, to remain effective when stored at room temperature, and to remain alive and intact through the digestive process despite the heat and acidity involved.
The probiotic spores stay intact until they reach your intestines where they are exposed to their ideal conditions. The spore coating is broken down and the good bacteria are released to populate and initiate their beneficial effects inside your gut. This protective mechanism makes our probiotics much more stable than others, and much more likely to be able to achieve real health benefits inside your gut. This allows our probiotic to be much more effective than other strains and brands.
